Unfortunately, I find it all too easy to let the Easter season slip by without purposefully finding ways of celebrating the true reason for Easter with my kids. This kids Easter snack idea was one small way for me to talk with my kids about Jesus, his sacrifice on the cross, and what the empty tomb means for us, all while they were busy constructing their masterpiece and gobbling it up. This idea is certainly not original to me, I’ve seen it in quite a few places, so I’m not sure who should get the credit for this kids Easter snack idea. Sorry!
Here is what you will need for this sugar loaded snack that flies in the face of all my attempts to reduce the sugar in our house! (I write this as I finish off the last few chocolate eggs from a bag of Easter chocolates I bought yesterday at Target!)
-chocolate covered donuts, we used Entenmann’s rich frosted chocolate donuts, and let me tell you, they were good!
-graham cracker
-shredded coconut flakes
-green food coloring
-Oreo cookie or some other small dark colored cookie
-chocolate frosting
Before I gathered the kids around the table I did a few very quick prep steps. I put some coconut in a bowl, added 2 drops of green food coloring to it, and stirred it around until the coconut was a lovely light green shade.
Next, I cut off the bottom of each donut so that it would sit nicely on the “ground” and so that the “stone” would be the right height to partially cover the opening.
Once I brought the kids over, we were ready to go. First the kids spread chocolate frosting on a graham cracker. It was difficult to stop them from licking the chocolate frosting covered knives!
The next step was placing the donut, cut sound down on the graham cracker to make our tomb.
Then they added the Oreo cookie to partially cover the opening to the tomb and act as the stone that was rolled away.
And to make it pretty, they sprinkled our green coconut grass all around.
The kids really enjoyed making these as much as they enjoyed eating them. And it really did provide an opportunity to talk with them about the Easter story and reinforce that very important message of Christ’s sacrifice and Him being raised from the dead. All day long I kept singing “Up from the grave he arose!”. I just love that hymn, we don’t sing it nearly enough! I hope you give this snack a try and take advantage of the teachable moment with your children. They seem to listen better when they are eating! If you do try it, leave me a comment and let me know, or pin it to Pinterest to try sometime soon. Have a Happy Easter and don’t forget that the sweetest gift of Easter is not left by the Easter bunny!
